United States senator from California, Kamala Harris, has announced that she will be contesting for the country's president in 2020.
ABC News reports that Harris made the announcement on a television programme, Good Morning America, on Monday, January 21.
Legit.ng gathers that the 54-year-old politician, who made the announcement on the day Americans commemorated the late activist, Martin Luther King Jr, said she is confident about her ability to lead America.
She said: "I love my country. I love my country. This is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are.
"The thing about Dr. King that always inspires me is that he was aspirational. He was aspirational like our country is aspirational. We know that we've not yet reached those ideals. But our strength is that we fight to reach those ideals.
"So today, the day we celebrate Dr. King, is a very special day for all of us as Americans and I'm honored to be able to make my announcement on the day we commemorate him."
The politician, who who was born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, said she believed the American people were looking for a president with "leadership skills, experience and integrity," who will "fight on their behalf".
She said: "On all of those points, I feel very confident about my ability to lead. I feel very confident about my ability to listen and to work on behalf of the American public. The American public wants a fighter, and they want someone that is going to fight like heck for them and not fight based on self-interests. I'm prepared to do that."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened an investigation to ascertain whether the United States president, Donald Trump, was working on behalf of Russia.
The investigation - a dual counterintelligence and criminal probe - was launched after former FBI director James Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017.
Counterintelligence aspect of the investigation was focused on whether the US president was knowingly or unknowingly working for Moscow and whether he was a threat to the country's national security.
