- The Oba of Benin has decried the lack of adequate electricity supply in Benin city by the BEDC
- According to the Oba, the BEDC has failed in its responsibility of supplying electricity to the people of the state
- The Oba also pleaded with President Buhari not to renew the licence of the company
The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resist move to renew the licence of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The Oba in his plea accused the BEDC of inability to provide electricity for the people of the state.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the president in the palace in Benin city, Oba Ewuare II said that while electricity supply is key to development, it is unfortunate that the BEDC has failed in its sole responsibility to the people of Benin.
He also said the Edo council of traditional rulers and chiefs have also issued a communique over the inadequate service rendered by the BEDC.
“In fact, during one of the meetings of the Edo state Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, we issued a communique condemning the inefficient performance of BEDC, including its estimated billing method.
“We also called for the withdrawal of the operational license of BEDC. In its place, Traditional Rulers appealed to the federal government to encourage and support the efforts of Edo state government in seeking alternative sources of providing electricity to meet the demand of the people," the Oba said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki, had sent the managing director of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Funke Osibodu, away from his office for leaving residents and the state in darkness for many weeks.
The mild drama happened while the governor was receiving members of the House of Representatives committee on power who were in the Government House on a courtesy visit.
