New police IG speaks about 2019 elections

- Abubakar Mohammed Adamu promised to tackle the problem of insecurity

- The new acting inspector-general of police assured Nigerians of free and fair election

- Adamu said everyone will be given a level-playing ground to play his or her politics

The newly-appointed acting Inspector General of Police Abubakar Mohammed Adamu has said he will restrategise to tackle the problem of insecurity in the country.

Daily Trust reports that Adamu spoke shortly after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and his predecessor, Ibrahim Idris, in Abuja on Tuesday, January 15. He said he would stick by the rules in directing the affairs of the nation.

On the 2019 elections, the new police chief assured that it will be free and fair and that the right things will be done.

He said: “We know that there are security challenges that we need to tackle in the country: issues of kidnapping, abduction and other security challenges. From the strategies put in place by the former IGP, we will restrategize and make sure that we tackle these challenges squarely.

“On the elections, you have heard from the former IGP, adequate arrangement has been made to make sure that free and fair and credible elections take place in Nigeria. We are going to build up on the strategies put in place to make sure that we have hitch-free elections in the country.

“Well, we are professionals. We are going to stick by the rules, we are going to do the right thing. We will not go outside the ethics of our job to do things that are untoward; everybody will be given level playing ground to play his or her politics.”

Legit.ng had reported that the former assistant inspector general of police, Abubakar Mohammed Adamu, took over as the new police boss after crucial meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Villa on Tuesday, January 15.

Adamu was sighted heading to the office of the chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari, on Tuesday morning, prompting reports that he would take over from Ibrahim Idris.

In a series of photo tweets by Bashir Ahmed, the personal assistant to the president on new media, the former IGP, Ibrahim Idris, was reported to have taken his successor, Adamu, to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.
