Buhari seeks support of international community to redirect water to Lake Chad
- President Buhari has appealed to the Canadian government to support the current efforts to divert water from the Congo River to Lake Chad
- The president said he would continue to draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake
- Buhari said it has been predicted that except there was a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it would dry up
The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Philip Baker, on Monday, January 15, told President Muhammadu Buhari that over 11,000 Nigerians study in Canada with many of them residing there.
Legit.ng gathered that Baker who was at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to present his Letter of Credence to President Buhari said the majority of the students eventually returned home to help build the country.
President Buhari again sought the support of the international community to redirect water to the receding Lake Chad.

A statement by the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, added that Buhari warned that “the about 40 million population in the region will pose adverse migration and security challenges to the world” if the lake dried up completely.
The president pointed out that banditry, illegal migration and terrorism would worsen if the lake was not rescued.
He said: “An academic rightly predicted that except there was a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it would dry up.
“Now, whenever I go for any global meeting or visit a country, I will always draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake, and the resulting negative effects.”

He appealed to the Canadian government to support the current efforts to divert water from the Congo River to the lake.
Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari renewed call for quick interventions and measures to curb the menace of Boko Haram insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin.
Femi Adesina, the spokesperson of the president, said in a statement in Abuja that Buhari made the appeal at a one-day consultation with heads of state and governments of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).
