- Akwa Ibom resident electoral commissioner said politicians should not destroy the country because they think they have visas of foreign countries where they can run to with their families
- The REC also stated that Nigeria's elite and political class who are recruiting thugs and pilling up money to buy votes are the real threats to the 2019 elections
The resident electoral commissioner in Akwa Ibom state, Dr Mike Igini, has disclosed that with effect from Tuesday, January 15, the United States of America and European countries may stop issuance of visas to prominent Nigerian elite and politicians.
Igini made the disclosure in an interview with The Guardian on Sunday, January 13.

Legit.ng gathers that Igini said the ban would remain in place until the elections are concluded.
He said: “I have been calling on various countries. First I have been advising Nigerians that they should not make election a violent thing.
“We should not destroy our country because you think that you have US, UK visa and visas of other European countries where you can run to with your family.”
Igini also stated that Nigeria's elite and political class who are recruiting thugs and pilling up money to buy votes are the real threats to the 2019 elections.
He said: “They are even more sophisticated now, they have hired some houses, collecting peoples Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), VIN numbers, telephone numbers and are also now collecting their account numbers."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the United States warned that widespread vote-buying could mar Nigeria's forthcoming general elections.
The warning was given by the US deputy representative to the United Nations, Jonathan Cohen, during a UN Security Council meeting on West Africa, on Thursday, January 10.
Cohen urged politicians, civil society groups and community leaders to ensure that the elections are free and fair.
