11 injured as thugs reportedly attack Saraki family residence

- Some thugs reportedly attacked the family residence of Senator Bukola Saraki

- 11 people were injured while 50 vehicles were destroyed

- Saraki urged the people to be calm and not engage in reprisal attack

The family residence of the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, in the Agbaji area of Ilorin has been attacked by hoodlums leaving 11 people injured.

The Punch reports that the attack took place on Sunday, January 13, as the hoodlums damaged 50 vehicles. It was also reported that Solagberu and Aliagan mosques were damaged as a result of the attack.

Alhaji Olanrewaju Yusuf who is the president of Agbaji Development Association claimed the armed thugs shot into the air when they arrived.

He said a seven-year-old boy died as a result of the attack which he claimed was carried out by members of an opposition party.

Yusuf said: “We learnt that a boy in Ode Alausa, just opposite this house (Saraki’s homestead), who was hit by a bullet has died. His name is Abubakare.

“The thugs came around 11.30am and shot into the air. In fact, they were provided cover by the police. At least 11 people sustained injuries from bullets, while about 50 cars including that of Imam Aliagan were destroyed. The thugs also stole four motorcycles, money and jewelry from shops deserted by their owners”.

The director general of the Peoples Democratic Party campaign council in the state, Professor Suleiman Abubakar, claimed the violence was perpetrated by the All Progressives Congress leaders so as to instill fears in residents ahead of the elections.

Saraki hurriedly returned to Ilorin from Erin-Ile in the Oyun local government area of Kwara state where he had gone to address a political rally.

The Senate president who visited Agbaji quarters, urged his people to remain calm and advised them not to carry out reprisal attacks.

He also visited the General Hospital, Ilorin, to sympathise with the victims of the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has accused Saraki of misinforming the public with his claims that suspected thugs working for the APC invaded his family compound in Kwara with the help of some policemen and destroyed a lot of things.

The allegation was denied in a statement by the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, in which the police said Saraki had not lodged complaint to the Force as of the time he held the press conference where the allegations were made, The Cable reports.
