- A NYTimes report has disclosed that the FBI opened an investigation to ascertain whether the United States president, Donald Trump, was working on behalf of Russia
- The investigation was soon folded into the inquiry currently being led by special counsel, Robert Mueller, concerning Russian interference in the 2016 polls
- The FBI had reportedly held off on opening an investigation until the bureau's former director, James Comey, was fired by the US president
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened an investigation to ascertain whether the United States president, Donald Trump, was working on behalf of Russia.
The New York Times, citing anonymous sources, reports that the investigation - a dual counterintelligence and criminal probe - was launched after former FBI director James Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017.
Legit.ng gathers that counterintelligence aspect of the investigation was focused on whether the US president was knowingly or unknowingly working for Moscow and whether he was a threat to the country's national security.
The criminal portion of the investigation, on the other hand, was related to the Comey firing.
The investigation was soon folded into the inquiry by special counsel, Robert Mueller, concerning Russian interference in the 2016 vote and possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow.
During the 2016 US presidential campaign, the FBI had reportedly been suspicious of Trump’s ties to Russia.
However, the bureau held off on opening an investigation until Comey was sacked by the US president, following the former's refusal to swear his allegiance and roll back the nascent Russia investigation, which is now being overseen by the special counsel.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that US President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey, under the guise of the latter's poor handling of Hillary Clinton’s e-mail scandal during the 2016 presidential election in the country.
The announcement sent shock waves through Washington as the sack ended the career of the man who was once seen as the unimpeachable and nonpartisan ideal of how a law enforcement officer should behave.
