Was the class really separated by race or not? More pictures from South African school surface online

Recently, controversial photos of a class separated according to race stunned the nation. But as the story gains publicity some people are coming to the defense of the school, saying that the photo had been taken out of context.

Controversy swept the nation yesterday after an angry mother posted a photo of what seemed to be a racially divided classroom.

The outraged mother had received the image on a Whatsapp group for the parents of the children in this particular class.

To her dismay, she had noticed that the children had allegedly been separated by race, with a small group of black children sitting off to one side, while the majority of the students sat together at a main table.

Naturally, people shared in the mother's outrage at the situation, condemning the school for the unacceptable move.

However, all might not have been as it seemed. Media consultant, Phil Mphela, posted photos that have yet to be seen on Twitter, saying:

"Looks like the viral pic yesterday of black kids being seated away from white kids DID NOT tell the whole story. The pic was taken at a specific moment and out of context because the kids rotated in groups throughout the period."

And indeed the children can now be seen playing together as can be expected. However, people responding to the post felt that the new images were damage control and not a true representation of what had happened.

Legit.ng learned the parent contacted the principal, who claimed to be unaware of the situation. The mother said she was annoyed about the situation and just hoped her son, five, was too young to understand what happened.

In reaction to the matter, North West education officials will be visiting Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke to investigate the allegations of racism at the school.
