10 interesting things to know about singer R. Kelly's scandal

Over the past few years, there have been serious rumours and reports circulating the internet which suggested that the legendary American RnB singer, R. Kelly had several sexual encounters with underage girls, including late singer, Aaliyah Haughton.

Well, it appears the disturbing sexual allegations labelled against the singer seems to have grown more intense with the release of the documentary series, "Surviving R. Kelly". Taking it back to a several years ago, R.Kelly's records of sexual abuse cases against him were clearly a time bomb bound to explode.

1. Throwing more light on his relationship with a then underage Aaliya Haughton, who was his protege, it will be noted that in 1992, Kelly released the song "She's Got That Vibe." in which part of the lyrics reads: "Little cute Aaliyah's got it." She was just 13. Several more release from the singer proved he had a penchant for specializing in sexual lyrics.

2. In the year 1994, the singer got married to a then 15-year-old Aaliyah in a secret wedding. It is imperative to note here that Kelly was the lead songwriter and producer on her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number." The marriage was later annulled in 1995 after Aaliyah's family becomes aware of it.

3. Although Kelly later got married to dancer/choreographer Andrea Lee in a private ceremony in the year 1996, it did little to stop the allegations from popping up.

In the years to follow, several women come out to accuse him of either sexually abusing them or having a sexual relationship with them when they were still under 18.

4. Shortly after he got married, a lady identified as Tiffany Hawkins filed a law suit against Kelly, and his record label, publishing and management companies, claiming personal injuries and emotional damage arising from an alleged sexual relationship with Kelly, which she says began when she was 15 and ended when she was 18. The case is reportedly settled out of court.

5. In 2001, a reporter, Jim Derogatis, who was pursuing the sexual allegation cases, received a video tape that appears to show Kelly having sex with a young woman which he turned in to the police. In 2002, police began investigation when another sex tape was sent anonymously.

"The girl in the video, now 17, was identified by her aunt, who said that her niece would have been 14 at the time the tape was made, based on her appearance. Kelly can also be heard on the tape referring to the girl by her first name."

6. Kelly denied the allegations saying: "It's not true. All I know is this: I have a few people in the past that I've fired... people that I've thought were my friends that's not my friends," he tells WMAQ-Channel 5 at the time. "It's crap, and that's how we're going to treat it."

7. In the same year, another lady identified as Tracy Sampson, sued the singer for initiating a sexual relationship with her when she was just 17. The case was also settled out of court. He was also sued by Dancer Montina "Tina" Woods and Patrice Jones on similar cases.

8. In June of the same year, Kelly was arrested and indicted on 21 charges related to child pornography resulting from the second anonymously sent videotape of him appearing to have sex with a young girl. He maintained his innocence until he was released on bail.

9. The child pornography trial against Kelly began in 2008 and it was reduced to 14 charges. He was later found not guilty on all counts after the jury deliberated for a day. In the years that followed, R.Kelly's reputation as a singer suffered and his career suffered as many people protested against the singer holding concerts in certain areas.

10. In the midst of this all, the singer continued to deny the allegations and releases the song "I Admit" as an answer to his critics in the year 2018. In December of the same year, the much talked about documentary series "Surviving R. Kelly" was released, causing massive outrage on the internet.

In the era of the 'Me too' movement, a lot of people are pushing for the singer to be punished for the numerous crimes he has committed against women. Although the singer and some of his fans still maintain his innocence, not so many people share that same thought including his own brother who revealed that they were both molested by their older sister when they were just kids.

Kelly's attorney, Steve Greenberg, told CNN that his client has done nothing wrong.

"Someone with an agenda has done a hit piece," Greenberg says of the docuseries. "(Kelly's) out in public. He's not hiding. There's no secret compound with sex slaves."
