In many states in Nigeria, seeking to marry a bride comes with bank-account draining requests that must be met. It has been on-going for years and there is no pulling the brakes anytime soon, not even all the western culture exposure can stop a woman's family from demanding an arm and leg to give up their precious daughter.
There has been many cases of people showing the lists they get when they go to seek a woman's hand in marriage. While some make sense, others are just completely outrageous and ends up being a topic of discussion on several social media platforms.
Recently, a Facebook user identified as MC Emmydon, shared the photos of the items his friend had to purchase for his wedding introduction in Imo state. It included several yards of African prints, drinks and bags of rice, all of which must have cost several thousands of naira.
Recall that Nigerian comedian Baba De Baba had raised an interesting point on one Instagram post where he stated that men can never respect women they 'purchase'. He argued that such men often result to beating up their wives when they become disrespectful as they subconsciously register them as purchased products rather than life partners.
While the idea of bride price is welcome in most African homes, to a foreigner, it appears as a form of payment to the family of the bride.
These days, charging an arm and a leg before wedding proceedings are carried out has become a topic of discussion on social media platforms. Just like in the most recent case of MC Emmydon's friend.
Meanwhile, a Zimbabwean bride reportedly failed to show up at her wedding. According to H-Metro, it was said that the woman disappointed her groom who happens to be a pastor because he is too violent.
It was added that the bride Naume Mangwarira left Apostle Samuel Kaunda and his family at their supposed wedding venue in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. The pastor is the founder of Glory House Ministries.
