Manchester United edge closer to completing first January transfer

- Manchester United are keen to land an experienced defender this January

- The side's leaky defense has seen them concede more goals than any of the top six clubs this season

- Efforts to sign Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly seem to have hit a snag

- The Premier League side is however inching close to completing the signing of Kostas Manolas

Manchester United's efforts of enhancing their backline during the ongoing January winter transfer window have been boosted.

The Premier League side is said to be close to landing the services of AS Roma star defender, Kostas Manolas.

According to a UK Metro report citing sources in Spain, United are closing in on a deal for the highly-rated defender.

The report further noted that Manolas has a £30.75 million release clause in his current deal, but it does not become active until the summer.

Therefore, the Red Devils are unwilling to risk losing their target signing at the end of the season, with top European clubs reportedly interested in the 27-year-old.

The Old Trafford outfit is desperate to sign a formidable centre-back after efforts to land one last summer under former manager, Jose Mourinho, failed.

Initially, the side had cast their eyes on FC Porto star, Eder Militao, but Marca contend United are close to signing Manolas instead.
