El-Rufai, not Buhari, recommended Zakari for INEC - Odumakin reveals

- The Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, has said that he was instrumental to the appointment of Amina Zakari in INEC

- The group's spokesman said it was Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state who recommended Zakari and not President Muhammadu Buhari

- Odumakin reveals the recommendation to appoint Zakari happened during the former President Jonathan’s tenure

Yinka Odumakin, an Afenifere spokesperson who is also an activist, said that Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufai appointed Amina Zakari for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Odumakin's position is contrary to the public belief that it was President Buhari who did so.

Odumakin made this known on Tuesday, January 8. He said that the choice of Zakari came up after former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan asked that Civil Society Organisations (CSO) nominate someone befitting for the office, Channels TV reports.

The activist also said he was then directed by el-Rufai to submit her CV to Oronto Douglas, the late special adviser on research, documentation, and strategy to the former president.

He said: “So, they were headhunting for credible people and that is why you have people like Prof. Jega, Lai Olurode, and the rest of them coming as independent people nominated.

But in the case of Amina Zakari, when that committee was working, we did not even know (anyone from) North-West and then Nasir el-Rufai also came to be part of the anti-Yar’adua cabal movement and was part of the process and he said there was this woman that worked with him as health secretary when he was the FCT minister.

“He said she was very savvy and he spoke very well of her. He said she was abroad so it took about two or three days to get her CV which I collected from him and gave to Oronto Douglas. So, beyond seeing her name on paper, Jonathan did not know who she was."

He stated further: “It is unfortunate that even our Presidency is lexically challenged to the point that they don’t know the definition of a niece.

"A niece, according to the Oxford dictionary, you don’t even need to go to the advanced level, is your brother or sister’s daughter or your brother-in-law or sister-in-law’s daughter. So how can you say she is not his niece?”

Legit.ng earlier reported that INEC said it was not going to terminate Zakari’s appointment and that INEC also refuted the reports that Zakari may participate in the collation results that may influence the elections.

It should be recalled that Zakari was appointed the head of the committee came on Thursday, January 3, a decision the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sourly disagreed with.
