A determined 41-year-old taxi driver has finally matriculated years after dropping out. The fact that he was able to matriculate has urged him on so that he plans on becoming a teacher.
According to the The Mercury, Khulekani Simelane, from South Africa, is among the oldest 2018 matriculants in KwaZulu-Natal.
He approached his former school, Phumanyova High, three years ago and asked if he could complete his high school studies. This request seemed very strange, at first.
Legit.ng learned that the principal, Zibuse Ncala, was initially reluctant given Simelane's age. This meant he had to go against education department's policy on overage pupils.
After much discussion, however, he and his staff agreed to enrol Simelane in Grade 10. Simelane had convinced them that he wished to improve his and his lives of his and his kids'.
Simelane found himself in class with pupils young enough to be his children. However, this did not faze him and he performed well.
He has now achieved a Bachelor's pass in his matriculation and has already applied for a bursary to pursue his teaching qualifications.
A delighted Simelane thanked the school and its teachers for giving him a chance:
"My teachers were much younger than me, but I respected them because they were giving me knowledge. I can’t thank them enough for the patience and support I received from them and the principal."
