- Atiku Abubakar has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari handing over of the APC campaign to the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu
- The PDP presidential candidate said President Buhari should not use the handing over as an excuse to be absent from the presidential debate on January 19
- Segun Sowunmi, the spokesperson for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, said the development also showed that the president did not have the rigour it takes to campaign
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Buhari not to use the handing over of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign to the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as an excuse to be absent from the presidential debate.
The presidential debate which is organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group, is slated for January 19, 2019.
The spokesperson for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi, in an interview, said it was sad that whereas other presidential candidates were busy campaigning and wanting to be questioned by the people, Buhari was boycotting campaign because he had nothing to campaign for.
Sowunmi said the development also showed that the president did not have the rigour it takes to campaign and govern the country.
He said: “President Buhari has only attended one campaign, which was the one held in Uyo (Akwa Ibom State capital). He is pushing people ahead to campaign for him because his chickens have come home to roost.
“It proves what we’ve been trying to say before that Buhari doesn’t have the energy and rigour to campaign.
“If he is giving someone else the task of leading his campaign, he could have as well given his presidential ticket to someone who has the energy. He should not use this as an excuse to be absent from the presidential debate."
Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari on Monday, January 7, inaugurated the APC campaign council and asked Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the co-chairman of the council to fully take charge of the campaign.
Speaking at the inauguration of the council at the international conference centre, Abuja, the president, who is the chairman of the council, said the leadership that formulated the campaign policy would supervise its execution.
According to him, the director-general of the council will have overall responsibility for all aspects of the campaign, including field operations while the secretary will be responsible for all administrative and treasury-related activities of the council.
