Smugglers reportedly kill customs officer, injure another in Ogun

- Hamisu Sani, officer of the Nigerian Customs Service, was on Sunday, January 6, allegedly shot dead by a suspected smugglers in Ogun state

- This is contained in a statement issued on Monday, January 7, by the public relations officer of the command, Abdullahi Maiwada

- Maiwada also said an inspector of customs, Tijani John Michel, barely escaped with serious machete cuts

There was pandemonium in the Ogun state command of the Nigeria Customs Service, on Sunday, January 6, after suspected smugglers reportedly killed an officer and another one sustained serious machete cuts.

Vanguard reports that the customs patrol vehicle was ambushed and attacked by the suspects. This is contained in a statement issued on Monday, January 7 by the public relations officer of the command, Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada.

The officers had intercepted eight reconstructed vehicles fully loaded with smuggled bags of rice, kept in a hideout at Asero community, in Odeda local government area of the state.

During the encounter, Maiwada said one of the officers, a customs assistant, Hamisu Sani, sustained serious injuries and died, while Inspector of Customs, Tijani John Michel, barely escaped with serious machete cuts.

Maiwada said: “The fallen officer has since been buried according Islamic rites, while the injured inspector is responding to treatment in hospital.

“Meanwhile, two suspects have been arrested in by the police in connection with the incident and eight vehicles fully loaded with the smuggled rice have also been secured and transported to Customs House in Abeokuta for further investigation.

“While we commend the patriotic role of our sister agencies and law-abiding citizens, we wish to categorically state that we will deploy all necessary apparatus to ensure that the perpetrators of this devilish act are brought to book to face the full wrath of the law.

“Finally, the re occurrence of such form of hostilities and intimidation by smugglers and their accomplice on our officers and men will never distract us from vigorously discharging our statutory functions.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that four people were reportedly killed in a clash between officers of the Nigerian Customs Service and smugglers in Ogun state.

Six other people sustained gunshot injuries during the clash which occurred at Ilara, in Imeko-Afon local government area - a border town with the Republic of Benin at 8.30am on Sunday, May 13.

Eyewitnesses said some suspected smugglers were accosted by a joint anti-smuggling patrol team while moving bags of rice in a convoy to Abeokuta, Ogun state.
