Go to Maiduguri - Buhari orders defence minister Mansur Dan-Ali

Nigeria’s minister of defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, on Wednesday, January 2, flew into Maiduguri on President Muhammadu Buhari’s directives to assess situation on ground and report to him following recent attacks in Borno north.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Dan-Ali confirmed this to newsmen after he held a two-hour crucial closed door meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai, at the Military Command and Control Centre.

The report said the Chief of Training and Operations, Maj-Gen Lamidi Adeosun, Principal Staff Officers at the Army headquarters and Theatre Commander, Operation Lafia Dole, Maj-Gen. Benson Akinroluyo, were attendance at the meeting.

It was learnt that the senior officers in charge of the Air Force and Navy components of the operations, as well as some field commanders attended the meeting.

“I am here on the instruction of Mr President, to come and see the happenings in the Theatre Command of the Operation Lafia Dole.

“I have been briefed by the Commander and the Chief of Army Staff.

“I am here to know what is expected, what the president should do to make things work and I have been briefed.

“So, I will take home all the briefings by each and every of the commanders here,” the minister said, but refused to give further details.

The report said Dan-Ali left for the Republic of Chad after the meeting where he is expected to hold a meeting with his counterpart in the country in view of recent attacks by the Boko Haram terrorists on areas bordering Chad and Nigeria.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the supposed meeting venue of members of the Boko Haram around the Baga area of northern Borno state was massively invaded and destroyed by aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as battle intensifies against terrorists in the country.

The bombing of the venue was contained in a statement obtained by Legit.ng from the Nigerian Air Force on Wednesday, January 2.

The short statement read: “The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole has destroyed a building being used as meeting venue by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters near Baga in northern Borno state."
