Just in: Alleged herdsmen burn down Governor Ortom’s 250 hectares rice farm

Some unknown gunmen believed to be suspected herdsmen have reportedly attacked a 250 hectares rice farm belonging to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state. The suspects allegedly set a portion of the farm ablaze.

Daily Trust reports that the portion of the destroyed rice farm located in the governor’s hometown of Gbajimba in Guma local government area of the state, is worth over N100 million.

The report quoted Kena Iordzua, the manager of the farm, who conducted journalists around the destroyed portion on Tuesday, January 1, as alleging that the gunmen came to the farm with a large number of cattle during the day and set the farm on fire at three different points.

The report quoted Iordzua as saying that because of the wild nature of the fire as a result of the harmattan, it could not be put off despite concerted efforts by those working on the farm.

According to him, security agents were mobilized to go after the armed men who shot sporadically in the air as they retreated out of the state.

The principal special assistant to the governor on special duties, Abrahams Kwaghngu, said the act was barbaric and a threat to food security.

At the time of this report, the commissioner of police in Benue state, Ene Okon, was yet to comment on the incident.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) said, on Monday, December 31, it had arrested 12 suspects in connection with the kidnapping of twin sisters in Dauran Village in Zurmi local government area of Zamfara state some weeks ago.

According to the police, the suspects are: Nafiu Usman, 28, gang leader, Farouk Usman, Alhaji Ibrahim, Ibrahim Ibrahim, Kabiru Usman, 30,Salisu Wadata, Shehu Mohammed, Bala Garba, 60, and Awal Jibrin, 41, among orders.
