- Warri-born activist Edafe Okporo reveals his sexual orientation on Instagram
- The young Nigerian revealed that he is gay and proud
- He also claimed that many Nigerian celebrities are gay and hiding it
Being attracted to same sex in Nigeria is seen as a taboo and even illegal as the law states that perpetrators are liable to 14 years imprisonment. However many individuals keep coming out as gay and proudly proclaiming that they can't help but be attracted and develop feelings for the same sex.
Seeing as it is against the law, most people keep it private, conceal their identity and live a lie just to survive. Some have however flown to foreign lands to seek refuge where the law permits them to express themselves without judgement or harsh punishment.
Recently, Warri-born, US-based activist, Edafe Okporor, announced his sexual orientation on Instagram and claimed that some Nigerian celebrities are also gay but hide it. He stated that he is gay and proud and hinted that he is starting a project that will explain what it means to be gay having grown up in Warri, Nigeria, a place where masculinity is the norm.
Many medical reports claim that although homosexuality is not driven by any biological factors, is most likely a result of an interaction of genetic, biological and environmental/cultural factors, there are evidences that it has happened a lot in history and is not strange to humans.
Some claim that homosexuals can't help it as some construct in their brains allow for them to be genuinely attracted only to the same sex.
