- The APC has claimed that Atiku Abubakar is now showing early signs of depression, adding that the former president is not focusing on his campaign
- The ruling party's remarks were in response to Atiku's claim that President Muhammadu Buhari is slow in tackling corruption in the country
- The APC further said that while Nigerians need campaign that will address the nation's problems, Atiku and the PDP are only interested in power
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has early signs of depression.
The APC alleged that this was why Atiku had been attacking the ruling party and President Muhammadu Buhari, Punch reports.
The former vice president had on Wednesday, December 26, claimed that the president, not the system, is slow in dealing with corruption in the country, adding that Buhari lacks political will.
By this allegation, Atiku was reacting to Buhari’s statement on Christmas day, Tuesday, December 25, that in the fight against corruption, it is the system that is slow, not him.
Atiku had said: “Mr President, the problem with your anti-corruption war is not the system. You are the problem!”
However, the APC's national publicity secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement on Thursday, December 27, said: “The PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is exhibiting early signs of depression, resulting from obvious frustration. Consequently, he is unable to focus on his campaign.
“Otherwise, Atiku should tell Nigerians why a discredited person like him should be elected as President instead of raising puerile allegations on a daily basis. President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC appear to be his main campaign issues, not his programmes for the country.”
The ruling party said that Nigerians need campaign that pays attention to issues that matter to them, claiming Atiku and the PDP, have their eyes on power.
The statement further said: “The trajectory is exciting as we see a brighter future showing up. We won’t yield to the PDP’s shenanigans. The obvious strategy of the PDP is to truncate the country’s journey towards economic buoyancy and social stability. We will not play the PDP’s game.
“PDP is acting an anti-people’s script. President Buhari remains unshaken by the desperate efforts being made by Atiku and PDP to blackmail the APC government. Everyone who was involved in corrupt practices would be brought to justice.

“PDP is not offering any alternative to the progressive course this government is pursuing. It is actually apparent that the party is not contesting the 2019 elections to redeem itself, least of doing any good for the country.”
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had said that his administration is slow in fighting corruption because the system is sluggish.
The president said this when he received the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) community, who paid him Christmas homage at his official residence on Tuesday, December 25, in Abuja.
President Buhari, who apparently was reacting to those allegedly accusing his administration of being too slow in tackling the nation’s challenges, including `endemic corruption’ in the society, said: “It’s not Baba (Buhari) that is slow but it is the system."
