The Benue State Livestock Guards on Wednesday, December 26, impounded 105 cows and 4 sheep caught grazing openly near Akawe Torkula College of Advanced and Professional Studies, Makurdi.
Confirming the Development, Commander of the Livestock Guards, Linus Zaki, disclosed that one herder named Kunje Saija was also arrested in the course of the operation.
He explained that in accordance with the Benue State Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, the impounded cows will be quarantined for seven days before being auctioned, if the owners fail to pay the fines stipulated by the law.
He cautioned herdsmen against the consequences of flouting the law, stressing the need for ranching of all forms of livestock in the state.
Governor Samuel Ortom recently restated the commitment of Benue State Government to full implementation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.
The governor had also emphasised that anyone who vilolates the law will be prosecuted.
Legit.ng previously reported that a Makurdi high court presided over by Justice Austine Ityonyiman on Thursday, November 8, issued an interim order restraining the Inspector General of Police and the Benue state commissioner of police from prohibiting or shutting down offices of the Benue State Livestock Guards in any part of the state.
The court also restrained the Inspector General of Police and the Benue state commissioner of police from preventing officers of the Benue State Livestock Guards from carrying out their legitimate functions of implementing the state open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law, pending the determination of the motion on notice brought before the court.
