Currently, Liverpool have the pair of Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren, who is just recovering from concussion as the only fit senior centre-back available for selection.

And going forward, Matip’s injury will come as a huge blow for the Jurgen Klopp tutored-side, who is now expected to ring the changes with Brazil midfielder Fabinho and James Milner likely to switch positions to defence and right back.

At the moment, Liverpool are facing a defence crisis as they prepare for Manchester United, Trent Alexander-Arnold is struggling with an ankle issue and Nathaniel Clyne is yet to return to action.

On the other hand, Van Dijk, has been ruled out of Liverpool’s knockout round fixture following his harsh tackle on Napoli forward Dries Mertens despite claiming it was a decent tackle.

I don’t think it was a bad challenge,’” the Dutch star said. “Unfortunately, I touched him but I would never go in to hurt him.

“I told him I never had the intention to hit him. I’m now suspended so I was a bit disappointed but we have plenty of quality players. It’s a great time to be a Liverpool fan or player.

“Manchester United are next. It’s a huge game but not a decisive one. We want to win and will try everything to make that happen,” Van Dijk submitted.

Meanwhile, previously reported Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez is facing six weeks on the sideline after fracturing his lower leg during Reds 3-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

According to The Mirror, the Liverpool defence ace was involved in a nasty tackle with Clarets defender Ben Mee in the 23rd minute and was forced to take an early shower.

The injury was greeted with hot exchange of words by the pair of Jurgen Klopp and Sean Dyche on the touchline as Gomez was stretched off. ( -> We have updated to serve you better.
