A much-changed Manchester United side squandered a golden opportunity of finishing top of Group H after losing 2-1 to Valencia, in their last group match at Estadio Mastella on Wednesday, December 12.

United boss, Jose Mourinho made eight changes to the side which beat Fulham at the weekend, with Andreas Pereira and Paul Pogba both starting in midfield.

However, the new side failed to produce the spark needed to propel the Red Devils to a comfortable victory in Spain.

The visitors struggled to settle in during the opening exchanges of the encounter, with Valencia dominating proceedings.

Valencia's efforts eventually paid off in the 17th minute as Carlos Soler handed the home side a deserved lead, thanks to Phil Jones' defensive blunder.

Juan Mata should have equalised for United nine minutes later, but his pounced effort on a misplaced defensive header only managed to hit a snap shot at goal.

Two minutes after the second half, United defender Phil Jones doubled the hosts lead after slotting the ball past his own keeper and into his own net.

Mourinho was forced to make a double tactical substitution after going 2-0 down, introducing Ashley Young and Marcus Rashforf in place of Fred and Marcos Rojo.

The duo combined perfectly to make the difference in the 86th minute as Rashford planted a header from six yards thanks to Young's brilliant cross to earn United a consolation.

The disappointing loss left the Red Devils rooted second in Group H with 10 points, two behind Juventus who also lost to Young Boys in their last group fixture.

The results imply that both United and Juventus have sealed a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, with Valencia dropping to the Europa League.

Meanwhile, previously had reported that Manchester United stunned Juventus 2-1 in Turin following late goals from Juan Mata and an own goal from Alex Sandro.

The much anticipated match did not come without a flourish as both sides tested their resolve in the elite competition.
