- Governor Nasir El-Rufai says if he loses the 2019 governorship election in Kaduna state, he will concede defeat before announcement of results
- Recall that ex-president Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 before results were announced
- Governor El-Rufai called for political campaigns that are based on issues and achievements ahead of the forthcoming general elections
As the 2019 general elections draw nearer, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has said he would concede defeat before the announcement of gubernatorial election results in the state if he loses the poll.
The governor, who made the declaration at a summit towards peaceful 2019 general elections in the state on Wednesday, December 5, warned politicians and their supporters against hate speech, falsehood and ethnic sentiments in the social media, The Guardian reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the governor called on stakeholders to ensure that political campaigns ahead of the general elections were based on issues and achievements.
He said: “It was the massive rigging of elections in 2011 that led to widespread violence at that time and Kaduna state lost over 800 lives.”
According to him, the 2015 election was a game changer, because it was believed to be credible particularly in the northern part of the state.
“We just returned from Osun state for the inauguration of a governor. I was there for the first round of election and it was the most credible election I have ever seen in the world."
Governor El-Rufai said election materials arrived early at polling units, adding that the election was violence-free.
According to him, if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts the 2019 general elections the same way it conducted the gubernatorial election in Osun, the forthcoming election would be violence-free.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor El-Rufai described the forthcoming 2019 general elections as a battle between thieves and honest people.
The Kaduna governor also accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of renting crowd from neighbouring countries because Sokoto people refused to come out for the rally.
The governor spoke on Tuesday, December 4, at the launching of his campaign council in Kaduna. He called on Kaduna people to show the PDP that the state would not allow them to cheat.
