Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric has been named the winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or award beating Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Paris on Monday night, December 3.

This will be the first time since 2008 that another player will defeat the duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d'Or award.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have both won the Ballon d'Or five times each since 2008.

Surprisingly, Argentina international Lionel Messi ended outside the Ballon d'Or top three for the first time since 2007 as he finished fifth.

Ronaldo came second, while Frenchman Antoine Griezmann finished third. Youngster Kylian Mbappe came fourth.

Luka Modric was superb last season for Real Madrid helping the Spanish giants to win the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League title.

The 33-year-old was also fantastic for his national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where he steered Croatia to the final before losing against France.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric won the FIFA 2018 Best player of the year award in a ceremony held in London on Monday night, September 24.

The Croatia international defeated Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah and Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to win the award in London on Monday night.
