Four-time African best player and former Barcelona ace Samuel Eto'o says he deserves credit for Mohamed Salah's sudden rise to stardom.

According to The Mirror report sports channel Al Kass, the former Barcelona forward and Salah were teammates at Chelsea in 2014, and Eto’o has now opened up how he helped Egyptian recover his confidence during his dark moments at the EPL club.

The Liverpool forward, Salah has enjoyed a leap in his career after 18 months stay at Anfield, missing the UEFA Champions' League winners' medal by whiskers last term.

And Eto’o believes his pep talks with Salah played a major role in reshaping his career.

“I hope that Salah remembers the day we were together in Stamford Bridge dressing room after he'd had a poor performance," Eto’o was quoted as saying to sports channel Al Kass.

“I asked him to be patient and told him ‘You are a good player and you will become a great player'.

“Salah has turned into that big player and will write his own story through persistence and strong desire,” added the 37-year-old, who currently plies his trade with Qatar SC and was named twice in the FIFA FIFPro World XI, in 2005 and 2006.

Speaking further, the Cameron legend Eto'o says it is now time for Pharaoh’s playmaker to make claim for the world’s best player award.

“The whole thing depends on Salah himself, " he noted.

"He has unbelievable skills and is currently performing at a top level that's allowing him to compete for Ballon d’Or,” submitted Eto’o, who was a key member of the Barcelona attack, alongside Ronaldinho, that won the 2006 UEFA Champions League silverware.
