- The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it is prepared to ensure a free and fair election is held in Rivers in 2019
- The assistant inspector-general in charge of zone 6, Adeyemi Ogunjelosi, says the police will not allow any intimidation of voters during the election
- Ogunjelosi added that there would be nothing like 'federal might' as voters would have the right to pick their choices
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), through its assistant inspector-general in charge of zone 6, Adeyemi Ogunjelosi, has promised the people of Rivers that the 2019 election in the state would be free, fair and credible.
Ogunjelosi promised that the police would remain impartial in its conduct of the election in the state.
According to him, the election will be violence-free and there will not be cases of intimidation of voters. Voters, he said, will have the free will to elect their choices.
Vanguard reports that Ogunjelosi spoke in Port Harcourt during his maiden visit to Rivers state.
He denied any plan by anyone to use the federal might to win the election, but argued that the electorate had the power to pick their preferred candidates using their permanent voters cards.
“We are fast approaching the 2019 election and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) said the Police are the servant of the people. We are here to ensure a violence-free election to keep our integrity.
“Nobody can threaten you with federal might. The police should not be seen as coming from the blues to lord it over the people. We are here to maintain the security of routes, electoral materials, collation centres and people to ensure that you cast your vote without fear of intimidation.
“We promise that in Rivers state, we will remain completely impartial. We will ensure that there is no violence. Those who will cause violence, I promise, will be behind bars before the election. The only power you have is to use your PVC. Who are we to say your votes will not count?” he asked.
The commissioner of police in the state, Ahmed Zaki, told Ogunjelosi that Rivers is faced with many crimes including political thuggery. He called for improved logistics to combat the menace.
Legit.ng reported earlier that Felix Obuah, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Rivers state, cried out recently over an alleged plot by some suspects to bomb his Krisdera Hotels and other properties located in Omoku headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state.
Obuah claimed that going by information he is privy to, it has been revealed that the alleged criminals would be provided protection by security officials.
