- The APC and PDP have been advised to accept the outcome of the 2019 election just like former president Goodluck Jonathan did in 2015
- A US don, Professor McCain said the losers should accept defeat and move on
- McCain added that it must be an election free of violence, where nobody dies
Professor Danny McCain, ambassador, Global Scholars from the United States of America, has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari, and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former vice president Atiku Abubakar, must accept the outcome of the 2019 presidential election to avoid bloodshed in the country.
Speaking on Friday, October 12, in Abuja, at the 9th annual Independence lecture with the theme: “The Nigeria of our Dream,” organised by The Change we NEED Nigeria Initiative, McCain said every vote must count, Nigeria Tribune reports.
He said the outcome of the election must reflect the aspirations of the people. He further expressed optimism that the next election would be peaceful as demonstrated by the former president Goodluck Jonathan when he accepted defeat and stepped down.
McCain said the government must work to achieve national cohesion, where everybody, whether Christian and Muslims, educated, non-educated, is working together to achieve the dream of the founding fathers of the country.
The ambassador said: “The first thing is that the election must be peaceful, an election where nobody dies. There should be fairness and justice. The election must be free and fair with every vote counts and every polling place has all necessary materials.
“The candidates should accept the results of the election. We believe that in democracy the outcome should reflect the will of the people and that is our prayers for this election.
“Whatever is the ultimate outcome of all of these elections, local election, state elections and national elections, the losers should accept defeat and move on. We saw this happened in 2015.”
In his remarks, the Convener of The Change we NEED Nigeria Initiative and general overseer of Charismatic Renewal Ministries, Dr Cosmas Ikechukwu, said that devolution of powers was the only way out the current quagmire.
In an earlier report by Legit.ng, a Facebook page associated with the ruling APC on Friday, October 12, released its prediction for the 2019 election. In its prediction, APC newspaper predicted that the ruling party will win in 30 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, while the PDP will win only in four states.
It also predicted that the states of Delta and Cross River would be shared equally between the two leading political parties.
