- The suspected assassins invaded his residence at about 1:15am on Thursday, October 11, and shot him on the right thigh
- Udeme said he suspected people are after his life, as the gunmen refused to take anything from him
Unidentified gunmen suspected to be hired assassins reportedly shot the former special assistant on electoral matters to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state, Mfon Udeme, on Thursday, October 11.
According to Vanguard, the former aide, who resigned from his post and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in September 2018, was shot in the leg by the gunmen, who were said to be nine in number.
Legit.ng gathers that the suspected assassins invaded his residence at Itam in Itu local government area of the state at about 1.15am.
The victim was reportedly shot on the right thigh after being dragged to a corner in the premises; but, however, survived.
He reportedly said: “I believe they came for me because they did not demand money, they did not take anything.
“I told them that we didn’t have much money in the house. I added that I had cash in the car but the men did not show interest in the money but shot at me. I do not know how I escaped.
“I think it was the gunshot that alerted my neighbours who now raised the alarm. They may have heard the sound and ran away. I suspect some people are after my life.’’
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom alerted the police command in the state to carry out a proper investigation, following the alleged murder attempt targeted at Obong Nsima Ekere, the managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
In view of the seriousness of the nature of the allegation made by Ekere, the governor also directed the state director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to probe the incident and report its findings.
