5 Buhari ministers who lost APC primaries and how they lost

Five ministers appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari who tried their lucks at the recently concluded governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in their various states failed to secure tickets due to one reason or the other.

Although, the five ministers got President Buhari's blessing to contest in their states, they weren't so much accepted by state leaderships of the party.

Two out of the five ministers were screened out before the primaries while two lost their tickets to candidates supported by the incumbent governors of their states.

Below are the names of the five ministers and how they lost the APC governorship tickets.

1. Adebayo Shittu

Minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu, who was contesting for Oyo state governorship, was screened out of the party for not having the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) certificate. Shittu insisted that he was illegally screened out of the election.

2. Aisha Jummai Alhassan

The minister of women affairs, Aisha Jummai Alhassan, popularly known as Mama Taraba, was also screened out of the primaries in her state. Alhassan may have lost the ticket due to her open support for Atiku Abubakar, who is a presidential candidate of the opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, said Alhassan was screened out over what he tagged as “divided loyalty.”

3. Mustapha Baba Shehuri

The minister of state for power, works and housing, Mustapha Baba Shehuri, was lost the ticket following the endorsement of Professor Babagana Umara-Zulum by Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, Daily Trust reports.

4. Masur Dan-Ali

Mansur Dan-Ali, the minister of defense, lost in Zamfara state following the Governor Abdulaziz Yari's endorsement of Shehu Idris. Yari's endorsement of Idis has created a huge controversy in the state and INEC has ordered the APC not to field any candidate from the state for election in 2019.

The minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Usani, was initially declared winner of the primaries in Cross Rivers by a faction of the party but the national leadership of the party recognised Senator John Owan-Enoh instead.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that a high court sitting in Port Harcourt nullified the nomination of Tonye Cole as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2019 general elections.

The presiding judge, Justice Chiwendu Nwogu, made the pronouncement on Wednesday, October 10, on the ground that his nomination is a function of illegality and unconstitutional acts.
