Breaking: Saraki, Melaye, others sue police IG Idris over invitation

The president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, as well as senators Dino Melaye and Ben Murray-Bruce, on Monday, October 8, sued the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, after they were invited for partaking in a protest recently.

The Punch reports that Saraki, Melaye and Murray-Bruce were among the three leaders of the PDP who protested to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the recently concluded election in Osun state.

The report said the police invited only Melaye and Murray-Bruce to appear before the Federal Capital Territory command of the law enforcement agency for allegedly assaulting some officers and destroying its property.

The top lawmakers was the court to order Ibrahim Idris and the commissioner of police, FCT command, to, among others, direct the defendants to jointly and severally pay the applicants the sum of N500m, being the pecuniary and exemplary damages arising from the humiliation, intimidation, harassment and unlawful attempt to arrest the applicants by the agents of the second respondent.

The report said court papers showed that the suit, with number FHC/ABJ/03/095/2018, was filed by Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
