- Lionel Messi scored his 41st goal of the year against Valencia on Sunday
- The Argentine has now netted more than 40 times in each of the last 10 calendar years
- Messi could score more for Barcelona as he is not yet ready to honour Argentina's invitation
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has taken his goals tally to 40 goals in 10 consecutive calendar years after netting the all-important equaliser for the La Liga champions in Sunday’s 1-1 with Valencia..
According to UK Daily Mail report, the 31-year-old Argentine has now netted 41 times in 2018, his 10th consecutive season. He has found back of the net more than 40 times for club and country.
The Barcelona playmaker in saving the Nou Camp outfit scored his sixth goal in the new campaign for the league’s defending champions.
During Barcelona’s 4-2 victory against Tottenham in a Champions League cracker at Wembley, Messi netted a brace to ensure the Catalan side claimed all bragging rights during the encounter.
With 41 goals already in the kitty this calendar year, the Argentine star still has less than three months, to the end of the year to add to his goals account.
However, he is not expected to do that in the Albestue’s colours in 2018 as he was not invited for the South American nation’s upcoming games, after informing current interim manager Lionel Scaloni he is not ready for selection.
The playmaker’s 40 goals run started in 2009 when he netted 41 times at the age of 22-year-old to announce his arrival on the big stage.
Interestingly, from then on Messi has continually surpassed the 50 goal haul and in 2012, netted 91 times to beat all comers.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously had reported that Barcelona settled for a 1-1 draw for the second week running in La Liga as they were matched by Valencia at the Mestalla.
The Spanish champions were in fine form following their 4-2 victory over Tottenham in the Champions League in midweek.
But Enersto Valverde's side were stunned in the second minute as Ezequiel Garay puts the host ahead from a corner with an easy tap-in to make it 1-0.
But the away side drew level from their talisman Lionel Messi after Luiz Suarez lays it back for the Argentine to apply a superb finish to make it 1-1.
