Real Madrid hand Julen Lopetegui ultimatum after poor run of results

- Julen Lopetegui has been handed ultimatum to improve Real Madrid performances in all competitions before El Clasico

- They suffered their second straight defeat to Alaves this weekend after losing 1-0 to CSKA Moscow last week

- Antonio Conte is one of the leading coaches tipped to take over if performance remain the same

Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui risks being sacked if the poor run of results continue this month's El Clasico.

Manu Garcia scored the only goal that handed the Galacticos their second defeat in the Spanish League this season.

Los Blancos have gone four straight games without a win in all competitions after being stunned 1-0 by CSKA Moscow in the Champions League last week.

This poor run of results could be attributed to the departure of both Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club after helping them win the UCL title third time on a row.

However, SunSport report that the former Spanish national team coach could be relieved of his duties should the run of results continue.

Real last won a game after narrowly beating Espanyol 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on September 22 - and will face Levante in their next LA Liga clash at home on October 20.

The club's president Florentino Perez does not want to sack Lopetegui, 52, just three months into his first season as boss.

Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and Real Madrid Castilla head coach Santiago Solari are in the front row to take over from the embattled Real boss.

Speaking after the Alaves defeat, Lopetegui said: "A coach does not think about it."

He added that: "Other people take decisions like that, but it's never good when there is a change in coach. It would be crazy.

"We have to move on, because the season is very long and there's a very long way to go. Whoever says Real Madrid are dead is always proved wrong in the long term.

"We [the players] are the first people that need to do more to improve and we're trying to do that. It's not fair to point the blame at anyone, we're all conscious of the reality.

"Results are what people talk about and especially when you lose, but we are still committed, we are still ambitious and we still want to win, it's in our DNA. We're on the right path despite the bad results."

Lopetegui was controversially appointed Real boss while in charge of Spain - just days before his nation kicked off their World Cup 2018 campaign.

Spain consequently sacked him before the World Cup and brought in Fernando Hierro, who was replaced by Luis Enrique after the tournament. previously reported that Raphael Varane has insisted on staying at Real Madrid regardless of being linked with a January transfer move to Manchester United.

Since winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France in Russia, Raphael Varane has emerged as a target for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho who wants him to bolster his squad next year.

Mourinho is known to be a keen admirer of the France international having lured Varane to Spain in 2011 whilst he was manager of Madrid.
