Not less than four hours to the deadline given by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to end primary elections, Governor Abdul Aziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara has given a directive to commence the poll in a bid to avoid punishment by the body.
The governor maintained that he would not afford to lose candidates of various position in the state, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Earlier, there was unrest as aspirants of All Progressives Congress (APC) had hindered effort to produce 2019 governorship and National Assembly candidates as a result of crisis within the party in the state.
The governor has announced that the APC governorship, national and state assembly primaries scheduled to hold on Monday, October 8, would begin by 8pm throughout the state and the result would be announced before the deadline.
Meanwhile, Yari in a recent world press conference at the Government House, Gusau, after stakeholders and security meeting on the rescheduled APC primaries has assured residents in the state of protection of lives and properties. Yari said as the leader of the APC in the state he could not afford to lose candidates in the state.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Yari, on Friday, October 5, called out his supporters for a peaceful protest over the decision of the national leadership of the APC to cancel the party’s governorship primaries held on Wednesday, October 3.
“I am calling on all our members to come out and storm the state Police Headquarters tomorrow (Saturday) by 10 am for peaceful protest.
“We will continue with this decision until the national leadership of our party do what is right on this matter,” he said at a press conference in Gusau.
