Barcelona settled for a 1-1 draw for the second week running in La Liga as they were matched by Valencia at the Mestalla.
The Spanish champions were in fine form following their 4-2 victory over Tottenham in the Champions League in midweek.
But Enersto Valverde's side were stunned in the second minute as Ezequiel Garay puts the host ahead from a corner with an easy tap-in to make it 1-0.
But the away side drew level from their talisman Lionel Messi after Luiz Suarez lays it back for the Argentine to apply a superb finish to make it 1-1.
Barcelona dominated the home side but could not find an opening to score the second and Valencia responded with a few the counter attacking moves but to no avail.
Russia international Denis Cheryshev had the first shout of the second half as his shot went inches wide from the post in the 47th minute.
Barcelona responded with Messi forcing off a good save from Neto in goal after a brilliant interchange play from Jordi Alba and Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho's should have scored for Barca when he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but his pocket was picked by Gaya who made a timely clearance.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw as Barcelona failed to utilize their chances as Sevilla go top La Liga ahead of the champions.
