Steve Bruce, who had a cabbage thrown at him by a Villa fan last weekend, almost promoted with his team in the Premier League and made it to the play-off final last season, where they were beaten by Fulham.

But since then, just three wins have been recorded in 11 second-tier fixtures during the current campaign, and Steve Bruce’s two-year tenure at Aston Villa has come to an end.

Owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have already given the decision the go-ahead, and Bruce will leave Villa after 102 matches at the helm.

"We would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment. We wish them well for the future," a club statement read.

"The process of recruiting a new manager has begun. In the meantime, Kevin MacDonald, Aston Villa U23s manager, will be in charge of the team for our trip to Millwall on Saturday."

The fresh list of candidates for the post of new Villa Park head coach already made. Brentford boss Dean Smith and Belgium assistant Thierry Henry are currently regarded as favourites for the vacant position. A former defender of the club John Terry can also be assigned.

Earlier Legit.ng had reported that Maurizio Sarri assumed that Terry can return to Chelsea as a coach too.
