Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president, has picked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the Enugu West senatorial district in the 2019 general elections, The Punch reports.
Legit.ng gathered that in the senatorial primary conducted at the Enugu-West zonal headquarters, Awgu, on Tuesday, October 2, Ekweremadu polled 690 votes to beat his closest rival, Isaac Okah, who had 84 votes.
Ogochukwu Onyema, another aspirant, polled 61 votes to come third, while Uche Onyekwelu and Oscar Egwuonwu polled 22 votes and five votes, respectively.
Ekweremadu in his acceptance speech declared the primary election as the best in the country and an example of a free, fair and credible election.
He praised his co-contestants for joining the race, saying: “This is the true spirit of democracy and, as a person, I like peaceful contests. I salute and urge them to join hands with me to ensure that the PDP works as a family to win the main election and continue to deliver quality representation to our people. I will continue to be fair and equitable to all."
Legit.ng previously reported that Enugu West senatorial zone on Sunday, September 2, organised a solidarity march in support of the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, in Enugu for his re-election.

The senatorial zone said they were in support of Ekweremadu’s re-election because he has performed creditably in office and positively touched the lives of the people of the five local government areas in Enugu west despite the prevailing economic challenges in the country. They presented interest nomination form purchased for him.
The constituents who converged begging him to go back to the Senate come 2019, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said there is no alternative to Ekweremadu at the moment who they said had impacted on their lives.
