Bauchi governor emerges APC gubernatorial candidate

- Bauchi state governor, Mohammed Abubakar, has been declared the winner of the governorship primary election of the APC that took place across the state

- The chairman of the electoral committee, Ahmed Bakori, said the incumbent governor got a total of 75,086 votes to beat three other aspirants

- The contestants included Yakubu Lame, Mohammed Pate and Bala Jibrin

Governor Mohammad Abubakar of Bauchi on Tuesday, October 2, clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket after two days of uncertainty about the fate of the primaries in the state.

Announcing the outcome of the exercise, chairman of the electoral committee, Ahmed Bakari, said Abubaklar scored 75,086 votes to defeat three other contestants, Yakubu Lame, Mohammed Pate and Bala Jibrin.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bakori said Lame secured 3,988 votes, Pate polled 2,886 while Jibrin garnered 2,539 votes.

Meanwhile, the three defeated governorship aspirants have called for the cancellation of the primaries in Bauchi, describing the exercise as full of irregularities.

Addressing a press conference jointly, the aspirants called on the national leadership of the party to intervene to ensure that justice prevailed.

The primaries, slated for Sunday, encountered some hitches, resulting in the exercise commencing Monday evening, amidst controversies that dragged on till the end of the primaries.

Meanwhile, had reported that one person was reportedly killed in Boi, Bogoro local government area of Bauchi state on Monday, October 1, while trying to vote in the gubernatorial primaries of the APC, just as two others were said to have been hospitalised for gun shots wounds by yet to be identified person.

The allegations were made by two of the contestants in the APC gubernatorial primaries, Yakubu Ibrahim Lame, and Mohammed Ali Pate, while briefing journalists at the NUJ press centre on Monday evening, on the conduct of the exercise.

The duo have announced their withdrawal from participation in the exercise calling for its immediate stoppage by the national secretariat of the party because according to them, the process was hijacked from the committee.

While further alleging that their supporters across the state were tear gassed, harassed and intimidated in order to ensure that they did not participate in the exercise.
