A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta state has declared a political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, candidate for the 2019 governorship election in the state.

Punch reports that Utomi emerged the party's flag-bearer for the gubernatorial election at a parallel governorship primary organised by Chief Cyril Ogodo-led factional state working committee of the party in Asaba.

Utomi defeated three other aspirants for the governorship ticket of the APC by polling 2,486 votes at the primary, which was said to be peaceful.

According to report, Engineer Victor Ochei, the former speaker of the state House of Assembly, scored 801 votes, while a former national deputy chairman (south-south) of the Peoples Democratic Party, polled 368 votes.

Report has it that Chief Great Ogboru polled 106 votes. The total number of delegates that cast their votes was 3,755.

As at the time of filing this report, delegates' votes are, however, being counted, at the second parallel governorship primary, which is also holding in Asaba, by Prophet Jones Erue-led faction.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the crisis in the Delta state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got worse, as two factions in the chapter failed to agree on either direct or indirect method for the state party primaries.

The Prophet Jones Erue-led faction chose the indirect method against the direct primaries method chosen by the Chief Cyril Ogodo-led faction.

The direct primaries method was also favoured by the party’s national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who inaugurated Erue as the state chairman, upon assumption of office.

A frontline governorship aspirant, Prof Pat Utomi, reportedly walked out of the Erue-led faction meeting after it endorsed the indirect primary method.
