FG announces public holiday on October 1

Monday, October 1, 2018, has been declared as a public holiday by the federal government, in commemoration of Nigeria’s 58th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was made on Thursday, September 27, by the minister of interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.).

Legit.ng gathers that in the statement which was released by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Mohammed Umar, Dambazau congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary and urged them to sustain the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration at “maintaining and strengthening the unity and peace of the country.”

The minister stressed the federal government’s commitment to promote national unity, social and political development and economic growth based on democratic principles.

Legit.ng previously reported that the Heritage Africa Village Square (HAvis), Abuja, is set to celebrate this year’s Independence Day on October 1 with the vibrant cultural and artistic endowments of Nigeria and China.

The celebration will take the shape of conversations and performances around the theme: ‘China-Nigeria: Shared Legacy of Culture and Humanity’ to mark the independence anniversaries of the two respective giants of the African and Asian continents.

Meanwhile, the federal government has kick-started activities lined up for the commemoration of the 2018 independence anniversary celebration with a photo exhibition, tagged “The Footprints of Nigeria’s Political Leaders,” which was curated by the ministry of information and culture.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, on Tuesday, September 25, the minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the 1st of October every year provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s unity, patriotism and commitment to nation-building.
