Civil society group releases statement on Osun rerun election, condemns violence

- Nigerian civil society situation room has released its observations on Osun rerun

- INEC on Thursday, September 27, conducted rerun in 7 units in the state

- The group said that the election was heavily police by security personnel

The Nigerian civil society situation room has released its observations on the just concluded rerun election in Osun state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, September 27, conducted rerun election in seven units in four local governments where the results were canceled on Sunday, September 23.

Legit.ng gathered that the election monitoring group said that the election was heavily policed with police and other security personnel, adding that their presence created fear among voters.

The statement read: "The election was heavily policed with police and other security personnel, including army, overwhelmingly deployed across the seven units in a manner that created heavy tension and apprehension among voters.

"There were also reports of political thugs and hoodlums being used to intimidate voters with the security forces standing by and failing to act.

"Observers also reported that incidences of violence and gunshots around some of the polling units and attacks against opposing political sides with supporters of a particular party being prevented from voting."

The group said that was clear that the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the election in the seven polling units where the election were rerun including violence also repeated themselves in most of the election, raising questions on why results obtained under this condition should now stand.

"From the situtation room's observation, it is clear that the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the election in the seven polling units where the election were rerun including violence also repeated themselves in most of the election, raising questions on why results obtained under this condition should now stand", it said

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the Osun state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the opposition party attempted to win by fraud.

It was reported that while reacting to the unconfirmed results of rerun election, APC’s director of publicity, research and strategy in the state, Kunle Oyatomi, said the PDP was unable to manipulate the result this time around, so they are crying foul.
