About 16 people have been arrested by the Nigeria Police for illegal possession of customised Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) observer tags, face caps and jackets during the Osun governorship rerun, Channels TV reports.
SP Folasade Odoro, the Police public relations officer in the state, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, September 27.
Odoro said: “Police team on stop and search duties at Orolu; intercepted vehicles with sixteen persons on board in possession of customised INEC tags, face cap and jackets with the inscription of “INEC Osun 2018 Election Observer."
According to him, the suspects were using the items to have easy access to restricted areas meant for accredited observers.
He also reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring adequate security for a free and fair re-run.
Legit.ng previously reported that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the governorship election in Osun state, Ademola Adeleke, has rejected today’s re-run election. He labelled it as a “charade” which must not be allowed to stand.
He said: "We report to the whole world the brazen theft and daylight swindling of Osun people who were criminally denied their rights to vote and be voted for by an anti-people conspiracy among INEC, security agencies and the ruling All Progressive Congress.
"An unprecedented travesty of justice and shattering of democratic values are ongoing in Osun State."
