- The Osun state govt has declared Thursday, September 27, as a public holiday to enable workers vote in the gubernatorial re-run exercise
- The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared the Saturday, September 22 election inconclusive, and ordered a re-run
- The margin of difference in votes cast for the two leading gubernatorial candidates had been lower than the number of cancelled votes
The Osun government on Wednesday, September 26, declared Thursday, September 27, 2018 as public holiday to enable the electorate to vote in the re-run gubernatorial election.
A statement by Sola Fasure, the media aide to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, in Osogbo, noted that the public holiday was to enable workers to participate in the re-run governorship election after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the September 22 election inconclusive, NAN reports.
Legit.ng notes that the governorship election was declared inconclusive and a re-run ordered, because the number of cancelled votes was higher than the margin between the two top candidates.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Ademola Adeleke, was leading with 254,698 votes, while his closest rival of All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboyega Oyetola, had 254,345 votes, a difference of 353 votes.
The margin was, however, less than the 3,498 votes in the polling units where voting was cancelled.
Consequently, the INEC returning officer for the election, Professor Joseph Afuwape, declared the poll inconclusive and ordered a re-run.
“Unfortunately as the returning officer, it is not possible to declare any party as clear winner of this election at the first ballot," Afuwape said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate for the Osun gubernatorial election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, pled with the people of the state, to not be afraid to vote for him again during the Thursday, September 27 re-run.
In a video message, Adeleke urged them to persevere and make sure they troop out and vote for him during the re-run.
