Paul Pogba watched Manchester United's defeat to Derby County from the stands at Old Trafford as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

The 25-year-old was not listed for the game as Jose Mourinho fielded his not too weak squad against Frank Lampard's side.

And after the penalty defeat Mourinho was asked why he stripped the World Cup winner of his vice-captaincy duties.

The United boss said: "The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore. But no fall-out. No problems at all.

"The same person that decides Paul is not second captain anymore was exactly the same person that decides that Paul was the second captain, myself.

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don't have to explain."

The Red Devils were knocked out the competition on penalties by their Championship opposition which has raised criticisms on the Portuguese manager to another level.

After Wednesday's training session, Pogba acknowledged photographers as he left Carrington training base following a frosty exchange with Jose Mourinho.

The Frenchman was caught on camera giving a high-five to a member of the backroom staff before Mourinho appeared to say something to him.

The France international gave his boss a stony look in response before they walked together for a moment, with more words and frowns being exchanged.

In extended footage, which lasted for over two minutes, Pogba appeared to be outspoken - in whatever they were discussing - before they both walked away.
