The Nigeria police have said some politicians bent on causing violence during the Osun governorship rerun election have started arming thugs ahead of the poll.
The deputy inspector general of police (DIG) operations and security coordinator for the election, Joshak Habila, on Wednesday, September 26, said the police through intelligence report had uncovered a plot by politicians to cause deadly violence during the poll scheduled to hold on Thursday, September 27, The Nation reports.
“We have an intelligence report that, there is a grand plan to turn the election gruesomely violent and deadly by arming thugs to unleash mayhem at polling centers. As law enforcement agencies, the police and other security agencies would not permit the breakdown of law and order," Habila said.
"Those of them preparing for fire for fire must be ready to bear the consequences of their actions which are designed to undermine this particular democratic process.
“It should be noted that the Nigeria Police Force will remain proactive and would not rest on its oars in the task to decode the identities of those democratic enemies.
He said security agencies will not let their guards down during the poll and urged residents to go about their lawful duties without fear.
Habila said only eligible voters with permanent voter cards and duly accredited persons on election duty will be permitted to areas where the election will be conducted.
“The Police and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed to maintain law and order and protect lives and property of residents.”
“Troublemakers and other interlopers are warned to keep away from the polling units and indeed from any part of the state. The police and other security agencies will leave no stone unturned to protect lives and property and maintain peace,” he said.
The police boss pleaded with residents to report infractions such as solicitation for votes, buying of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) and any plan to rig or disrupt the election.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Osun state governorship election, Iyiola Omisore has told his supporters to go with any political party that believes in what the SDP stand for.
In an attempt to swing his supporters, Omisore has been courted by both All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after INEC declared the governorship election in Osun state inconclusive.
However, in a statement by Jide Fakorede, his media aide, Omisore had decided he would not negotiate for "personal gains and abandon my people".
