- Atiku reportedly visited Omisore in Osun state
- The visit was reportedly to convince Omisore to work for the PDP ahead of the Osun rerun
- Senate president Saraki and another PDP senator had earlier visited Omisore over the same issue
Atiku Abubakar, PDP presidential aspirant and former vice president, has reportedly visited Iyiola Omisore, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), to seek his support over the Osun state reruun election coming up on Thursday, September 27.
Until May, Omisore was in the PDP, but he left after it was clear the party’s power brokers had settled to hand the governorship ticket to Ademola Adeleke, brother of the late Isiaka Adele, who had himself defected to the PDP after the All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to hand him the ticket for the senatorial bye-election to replace his brother, who had died in April 2017.
Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Saturday’s election inconclusive and fixed a rerun for Thursday, September 27, PDP leaders, notably Bukola Saraki, the Senate president, and Abiodun Olujimi, the Senator representing Ekiti South at the National Assembly, have been visiting Omisore in Osun state in a bid to convince him to pass on his supporters to the PDP for the rerun.
Details of the meeting are not yet public but a source quoted by Sahara Reporters said: “Atiku had first of all spoken to him on the phone yesterday, but the former Vice President travelled to Osogbo this afternoon to physically meeting with him.
“I won’t tell you specifically what went down at the meeting but I can generally tell you that it was all about convincing Omisore to work for the PDP ahead of the rerun. Some offers have been made but we’d see how it goes.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported Senator Omisore had given his condition for supporting either Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeleke of the PDP had 254,698 while the candidate of APC, Oyetola, polled 254,345 thereby forcing the election into a rerun after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the result inconclusive.
Omisore said he would only support the candidate that agrees to pay salaries and pension.
