Pep Guardiola says Man City’s priority this season is the Premier League

- Pep Guardiola is eager to repeat previous success at Barca and Bayern in the English topflight

- The Spaniard is now set to rest some squad members during the Carabao Cup

- Arijanet Muric is likely to debut in goal against Oxford

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that the Etihad dwellers plan to dominate the English game in the coming seasons after last season’s success story.

According to a UK Daily Mail report, the EPL defending champions, who emerged the first team to claim the league silverware with over 100-point haul are primarily targeting a defence for their title this campaign.

However, the highly-experienced manager Guardiola, who enjoyed similar success at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is set for the defence of the Carabao Cup but will afford to hand rest to some of City’s top stars against Oxford on Tuesday.

The first priority is the Premier League, that is the nicest one.

“When I see, for example, three teams like Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus in 10 years they won seven leagues, they show me they are the best teams.

“We want to be consistent and solid in that competition.

“After in the knockout games we want to improve on our mistakes we had in the past in knock-out games - to be more solid, avoiding mistakes and we're going to try (to go for) it (in the Carabao Cup),” Guardiola said.

Last weekend, the Citizens returned to winning ways after thrashing Cardiff 5-0 on Saturday days after a surprise loss to French Ligue 1 side Lyon in their Champions League opener.

The Spaniard is expected to hand starting roles for some of City’s fringe squad members like Oleksandr Zinchenko and Brahim Diaz.

Zinchenko has not had any game time for City this season while fellow midfielder Diaz's only involvement came as a substitute in City's Community Shield win over Chelsea at Wembley last month.

In addition, Brazil ace Danilo is likely to make the starting lineup after an ankle injury while the pair of Nicolas Otamendi and Riyad Mahrez could also enjoy game time during the showdown at the Kassam Stadium.

“I have been quite clear the guys that are going to play, all of them in the first team.

“Danilo is coming back, Aleks (Zinchenko) and Brahim, so some players are going to play because they need rhythm.

“Nico (Otamendi) is to play. They don't play too much in the last month so we're going to play a lot of players that haven't played,” added the Spaniard, who is yet to decide on young goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, after his return from a season-long loan at NAC Breda following Claudio Bravo’s injury.

“I don't know. I haven't made a decision. I want to speak with Xabi (Mancisidor, head of goalkeeping),” he submitted.

Meanwhile, previously had reported that Faouzi Ghoulam has dashed the hopes of potential switch to Manchester City after signing a new five-year deal with Napoli.

The Pep Guardiola tutored-side are reportedly plotting a move to for the highly-rated left back next summer.

However, the Serie A outfit took to the social media to confirm the latest development.

"With regard to the “freeze on the renewal of the contract”, renewed until June 30, 2022,” a tweet from Napoli’s official Twitter handle read in part.
