It is time to establish farm settlements for corpers in Imo - Okorocha tells NYSC

- Rochas Okorocha wants the management of the NYSC to establish farm settlements for corps members in the state

- Governor Okorocha promises that his government will support the move if taken into consideration

- He adds that no meaningful development will take place in an unsecured atmosphere

The governor of Imo, Rochas Okorocha on Monday, September 17, called on the management of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to set up farm settlements for corps members serving in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okorocha made the call at the official closing ceremony of 2018 batch ‘B’ stream 2 orientation course of corps members held in Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre local government area of the state.

Represented by the state commissioner for talent and youth development who is also the chairman of the NYSC governing board, Ifeanyichukwu Onwueyiagba, Okorocha said that establishment of farm settlements would boost food production and wealth creation, stressing that the importance of agriculture to the nation’s economy could not be over emphasised.

He said that the NYSC had lived up to its expectation in the state with the corps members doing exceedingly well in the education, health and agriculture sectors.

The governor harped on the importance of good governance and security, adding that no meaningful development could take place in an unstable and insecure society.

He said his government would continue to provide the necessary support, assistance and enabling environment for the scheme to realise its goals and meet its objectives.

The coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Sunday Aroni, urged the corps members to put into practice all they learnt in the camp, especially on security, channel of communication, voter education, drug abuse and disaster management.

Aroni said that skill acquisition training would be continued at the various centers during their primary assignment.

He further said this would help them to create wealth and fight unemployment and poverty.

According to him, the NYSC management will continue to sensitise employers of labour on the need to accept corps members posted to their organistaions.

He commended the state government and personnel of collaborating agencies for support and for discharging their duties creditably and responsibility.
