Officers at the National Defence College, Abuja, have been trained by experts from the College of International Security Affairs, National Defence University, Washington, USA, on the need to “develop a strategic mechanism” to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency.

While meeting the NDC commandant, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo, the leader of the US experts, Ambassador Erica Ruggles, stated: “Our mission is to educate and prepare senior civilian and military security professionals and partners for the strategic challenges of the contemporary security environment."

One of the experts, Dr Thomas Marks, stated: “Protecting citizens in all spectrums in a democratic dispensation is the fundamental responsibility of governance.

“There is the need to understand the root causes and drivers of radicalisation which leads to violent extremism at the strategic level. This will help to develop a framework for a strategic response.”
