63 political parties notify INEC over presidential primaries

- A total of 63 political parties have issued notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct their presidential primaries,

- Ninety-one parties have served notices for the commission to observe their primaries for other offices

- The parties wrote to the commission to send observers to witness the conduct of the primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been notified by 63 registered political parties out of 91 for their plans to conduct primaries to elect candidates for the 2019 Presidential elections, The Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the parties have written the electoral body to send observers to witness the conduct of the primaries as required by the Electoral Act 2010 (As amended)

A source within INEC, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to make the details public, revealed this in Abuja, on Saturday, September 15.

The source said: “So far, 80 of the 91 political parties have indicated intention to conduct primaries. Only 10 parties have issued notices for FCT elections for the six Area council chairmen and 62 Councillorship seats. 63 parties have given notices for presidential primaries.”

On other issues, the source said the Smart Card Reader would be used for the 2019 elections regardless of whether or not the Executive and Legislative arms of government were able to resolve the stalemate over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act amendment bill which the President has declined assent.

Legit.ng previously reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed a date for its presidential primaries to elect a candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

The party's national working committee said the primaries for the ruling party would take place on Thursday, September 20.

The party in its guidelines for the conduct of the process said the presidential candidate would emerge through direct primary.
