A 79-year-old man has proven that age is just a number after graduating with a PhD in Religion and Theology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal., South Africa.

Ossie Kretzmann was conferred the highest academic qualification in September 2018 by UKZN's Chancellor, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

A beaming Kretzmann told News24: "An old dog may not be able to learn new tricks, but with their assistance I have come to see that all things are possible at any stage of life."

He revealed that a theological question around infant baptism and believer's baptism led him to embark on his research in his retirement.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa does not allow those who underwent the former to go through the latter. Kretzmann's research focused on why this is the case.

He said the research required extensive travel, including overseas. However, he is happy that he has resolved a long-term concern.

Kretzmann also hoped that his research could be of use to the Methodist Church. He's now the oldest graduate from UKZN's College of Humanities.

Congratulations to the aged achiever!
